At last-Fine weather for the Final after the previous years being cursed by rain, wind and general miserable conditions so the efforts made to advance the date for the Final and the co-operation of all Competitors playing their matches in good time certainly paid dividends as the Sun shone bright at Northop to welcome the Finalists to contest the 5th Final since 2014 and lo and behold two familiar faces were in evidence as the defending Champions, Alan Beavan & Alan Stubbs were there again just like Crosville buses, you get one then along comes another. The Alan's featured in the inaugural Final but finished second best then but made amends last year by a last hole win over Ian Cameron & Martin Jones of Padeswood & Buckley and coincidentally their opponents this year were also from P&B as Reg Weigh & Stuart Fogarty took some notable scalps en route to the Final.
The huge crowd folloiwing the match, well, Vice-Captain, Ray Lewis and the Secretary followed at a respectable distance which grew and grew as their buggy ran out of petrol on the 1st fairway giving Ray a nice walk back to the Clubhouse to collect a replacement, enabling them to be back to witness a sparkling start by the Alans as AB took 3 points on the first whilst AS followed his example in spades as he then notched up 3-pointers on the next 3 holes leaving Reg & Stuart with a mountain to climb early on but although their efforts resulted in some solid scoring that explosive start by their opponents meant that their 18 points after 9 holes trailed the Alans by 5 points.
A 'double Blob' on the 10th hole certainly didn't help their cause as the deficit was increased to 7 points and then 8 as AS bagged 3 points on the par 5 11th and although they setted down to play some steady golf over the remaining 7 holes to card 16 points, it wasn't enough to make up that early deficit especially as the Hawarden 'lads' maintained their good form also scoring 16 towards their 'back 9' total of 21 and a total score a very creditable 43 against a total of a solid 36 points to take the honours and become the first two-time winners of the Competition.
The apres golf sarnies laid on by Nikki and the liquid gold to wash them down ended the day on a great note, on a day which had been notable again by the sporting spirit and fine camaraderie exhibited by all the Finalists throughout, and I would personally like to pass on my thanks and congratulations to the winners and runners-up and to all the Competitors in what has been a very successful Competition this year with a record number of entries. Our thanks also to all concerned at Northop GC in their efforts to make us feel so welcome.
The Trophies for Winners and Runners-up will,as usual,be presented at our forthcoming Annual Dinner on 11th October.
